The Candidates and the Issues: Abortion

As Election Day 2008 looms ever closer, and campaign rhetoric is reaching a fever pitch, let’s take a closer look at the candidates and their positions on important issues.  Today’s issue is abortion.  The information collected is based largely on the voting records of the candidates, not what they say in stump speeches and campaign rallies.

Obama

  • In the Illinois state Senate, he opposed a bill that prevents the killing of infants mistakenly left alive by abortion
  • Supports partial birth abortion
  • Supports Roe v. Wade
  • Rated 100% pro-abortion by NARAL
  • Voted no to legislation that would help fund law enforcement efforts to prohibit minors from crossing state lines to seek an abortion
  • Voted no to legislation requiring parental notification of minors who cross state lines seeking an abortion

McCain

  • Supports overturning Roe v. Wade and remanding the issue of abortion to the states
  • Supports abortion in case of rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger
  • Opposes partial birth abortion
  • Opposes public funding of abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or danger to mother
  • Has a 96% pro-life rating from NARAL
